 66th Azalea Festival blooms in Wilmington

Wilmington is celebrating the season with its 66th annual North Carolina Azalea Festival.

Festivities continue through Sunday, April 14.

Wednesday, April 10

Coronation of Azalea Festival celebrity Queen Jennifer Wayne, granddaughter of actor John Wayne, is at 3 p.m. in Riverfront Park in downtown Wilmington. Admission is free to the standing-room-only event.Thursday, April 11

The Cole Bros. Circus is at Wilmington International Airport. Shows are at 4:30 and 7:30 p.m. Thursday and Friday; 1:30, 4:30 and 7:30 p.m. Saturday and 1:30 and 4:30 p.m. Sunday.

Tickets are $28 VIP, $25 reserved, $21 general admission.

Legendary rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd plays at 7 p.m. at a standing-room-only outdoor concert at Cape Fear Community College, 411 N. Front St. in downtown Wilmington. Tickets are $40. Gates open at 5 p.m.

Friday

The Cape Fear Garden Club Azalea Garden Tour is 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Friday through Sunday. Tickets are $20 each and available through the festival ticket office at (910) 794-4650.

The festival’s juried art show is 10 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Sunday at Hannah Block Community Center, 120 Second St. in downtown Wilmington. Admission is free.

The festival street fair launches with entertainment from 6-10 p.m. in downtown Wilmington on Water, Front, and Market streets.

The Avett Brothers perform in concert at 7 p.m. at Cape Fear Community College. Tickets are $45.Saturday

The festival street fair continues 10 a.m.-10 p.m. with more than 200 arts and craft vendors, 40 food vendors, four stages, a children’s area and fireworks at 9 p.m.

The American Legion is having a coin show at 702 Pine Grove Road from 10-5 Saturday and 10-3 Sunday. Admission is $1.

The N.C. Azalea Festival boxing tournament is 2-6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at Williston Middle School, 401 S. 10th St. Admission is free.

Colt Ford and the LACS play at 7 p.m. at Cape Fear Community College. Tickets are $25 and $50 VIP.

Sunday

The street fair continues from 10 a.m.-6 p.m.
