Art gallery offers winter classes in a variety of media

-A A +A

The tourists are fewer, the pace is slower, but many area artists still visit Southport in the quiet winter months.
Franklin Square Gallery is a hub of artistic activity, with an array of classes and workshops for both beginners and professionals. Painters and potters from Wilmington and throughout Brunswick County travel to Southport to participate.
The gallery sponsors classes in several different media. On Tuesday mornings, Dick Staat of Oak Island leads a watercolor workshop for advanced painters in the upstairs studio. Many well-known local artists like Nancy Hester, Roger Tatum and Wanda Cornelius attend regularly.
The figure-drawing class meets Thursday mornings. This class also operates as a workshop with a live model each week. Artists work in their own medium. Coordinator Jan Boland from St. James is a pastel artist, while Jan Triplett of Bald Head Island paints in oils, and Paula Thommen in watercolors and ink. The watercolor and figure-drawing classes are partially funded by Brunswick Arts Council.
The pottery and painting classes are sponsored by Brunswick Community College and run for eight-week terms. Ceramics instructor Kimberly Caroon leads several classes for beginners and advanced students in the Firehouse Pottery Studio, Southport’s former firehouse adjacent to Franklin Square Park. Her beginning students, many retirees from throughout the county, often exhibit at the gallery.
The painting class led by Rusty Hughes meets on Mondays and Wednesdays and caters to beginning and advanced painters. A classically trained artist, Hughes strolls through the class helping each student individually. Oak Island painter Eloise Randolph has her work hanging in many local galleries, but still comes to this class.
“There is nobody who can compare to the knowledge he has.”
A class or workshop is available almost every day of the week and all are open to the public. For more information or to join any of these classes, call the individual instructors: Dick Staat at 201-4090; Jan Boland at 253-3101; Kimberly Caroon at 540-0007; and Rusty Hughes at 457-5010.
