Two years ago, the Shallotte Board of Aldermen instructed fire chief Paul Dunwell to apply for any and all available grants to keep the department moving forward.
Last year, the board signed off on an application for a Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s Homeland Security division. The board approved another SAFER application this year.
SAFER grants are available to departments to help them meet federal standards including a four-minute response time and four firefighters per shift.
