Band of the Week: Fantastic Shakers shake up Sunset Beach Aug. 28

-A A +A

The third week of September 1978 marked the beginning of an era with the formation of The Fantastic Shakers, known as the South’s finest show band.

Since that time nearly 35 years ago, The Fantastic Shakers have performed more than 6,000 engagements, including more than 400 wedding receptions, 700 conventions and countless clubs.

Their performance venues stretch from New York to Florida and throughout the Southeast.

South Carolina’s Grand Strand has become the group’s summer home. “Myrtle Beach Days,” their trademark hit single, catapulted The Shakers to the top of Carolinas music groups.

Their blend of experience and longevity has allowed the band a level of versatility few other groups can match.

With five lead vocalists and as many as three horns, they can perform almost any style of music, from up-tempo dance and rock to smooth easy listening for more subdued occasions. What sets them apart is their personality. From start to finish, every performance becomes a party.

Beyond the Carolinas, memorable Fantastic Shakers engagements include the Grand National Dance Championships in Atlanta (three times), the Hot Summer Nights Dance Fest at Lincoln Center in New York City, and the American Bop Association Convention in Cincinnati (twice).

They’ve also teamed with national artists including The Beach Boys, KC and the Sunshine Band, The Four Tops and Jan and Dean.

The Shakers are also recipients of many beach music awards through the years.

They perform 6:30-8:30 p.m. next Wednesday, Aug. 28, in Village Park on Queen Anne Street in Sunset Beach as part of Brunswick County’s free summer concert and movie series.
