South Carolina Sports Academy beat Brunswick Community College 92-87 in overtime in a non-region men’s basketball game Monday at the Dinah E. Gore Aquatics & Fitness Center gym. SCSA is post-graduate prep academy that opened in 1998 in Garden City, S.C.,
For BCC (5-3), freshman Demarkus Forbes scored 10 points, sophomore Khari Faison 14 points, sophomore Lattrell Royster 18 points and sophomore Quinton Morrow 19.
BCC trailed 89-85 in overtime but twice passed the ball out of bounds in the final 45.5 seconds. Travis Frye hit three of four free throws in the final 21.7 seconds to clinch the victory.
The Dolphins trailed 76-73 with 1:13 left in regulation, but Darrion Eastmon made a layup. After SCSA made a free throw, Morrow made a baseline layup to tie the score 77-77 with 34 seconds left. SCSA held the ball for a final shot, but it was no good.
A 3-pointer by Morrow gave BCC a 55-50 lead after halftime, and the Dolphins went on to take 64-54 lead as Royster and Faison scored the final four points in the run.
The two teams played evenly in the first half. The Dolphins’ Allen Hauser suffered an apparent leg injury with 12:41 left in the first half but returned in the second half. SCSA hit many 3-pointers in the first half and that helped it take a 24-20 lead with 12:52 left. Forbes hit a 3-pointer that tied the score 26-26 with 7 minutes left. A 3-pointer by BCC sophomore Zack Chandler tied the score 38-38 with 3:24 left and his 3-pointer with 31.7 seconds left put BCC ahead 46-42. The half ended with the Dolphins ahead 46-43.
