On Sophomore Day, sophomores Marcus Graham and Steve Johnson led a second-half rally as the Brunswick Community College basketball team beat USC Sumter 92-87 Sunday on Walter Shaw Court at the Dinah E. Gore Fitness & Aquatics Center gym.
Graham finished with 28 points and Johnson 11. Tre Francisco scored 19 points, sophomore Kameko Walls 13 and sophomore Alex Tucker 11.
BCC trailed 44-37 at the half but Graham scored 13 points and Johnson scored 10 as the Dolphins took a 69-55 lead with nine minutes left.
BCC finishes the regular season 15-15 and plays this week in a first-round game of the NJCAA Division I Region 10 championship basketball tournament in Spartanburg, S.C.
Tucker helped keep BCC on pace with Sumter as he scored the Dolphins’ first two baskets and assisted on a third. A 3-pointer by Walls and a layup by Quinton Morrow tied the score 17-17.
A 3-pointer by Francisco put BCC ahead 26-19, but Sumter’s Johnny Ellis hit a 3-pointer to tie the score 26-26. Sumter then outscored the Dolphins 18-11 the rest of the half in taking a 44-37 halftime lead. Back-to-back 3-pointers gave Sumter a 37-33 lead, and it scored the final basket of the half on a layup just before the buzzer.
BCC dominated the second half. A 10-0 scoring run put it ahead 47-46.
With Sumter ahead 48-47, Johnson scored off a pass from Graham. Graham then hit a 3-pointer from the right corner.
After Sumter hit a 3-pointer, Johnson hit two baskets and Graham put back a rebound, putting BCC ahead 58-51.
Sumter hit another 3-pointer, but Morrow scored off a pass from Johnson and Johnson scored BCC’s next basket on a dunk. Graham hit a jumper, Francisco scored and Graham scored again as the Dolphins took a 69-55 lead. BCC maintained the large lead for most of the rest of the game.
