The Brunswick Community College baseball team split a doubleheader Sunday at Founders Field against Wilkes Community College, winning the first game 8-1 in nine innings but losing a scheduled seven-inning second game 7-5 in nine innings.
In the first game, Zachary Andrews was the winning pitcher, giving up seven hits and no runs in six innings. He walked one and struck out five.
Justin White gave up a run in 1.1 innings. Jimmy Boyd finished the game, pitching 1.2 scoreless innings.
For BCC (5-2), Hunter Allen was 2-for-4 with a walk and two RBIs. Ryan Brendle was 2-for-4 with a walk and one RBI. Bryson Benton was 2-for-4 with a double, a walk and one RBI. Anthony Colantino was 1-for-4 with a walk. Ryan Hill was 1-for-4 with a walk and a double. Substitute Ryan Maksim was 2-for-2 with two RBIs. Damon Hoggard was 1-for-4.
The Dolphins scored two runs in the second on a two-out double by Allen. He drove in Colantino, who led off and was safe on an error, and Hoggard, who had singled.
In the fourth, BCC scored twice with two outs. Hill doubled. Allen and Corbett walked. Brendle singled off the first baseman’s shoulder, scoring a run.Benton beat out a slow roller, scoring a run.
BCC scored in the fifth and took a 5-0 lead when Hill led off with a walk, stole second, went to third on a groundout and scored on Corbett’s sacrifice fly.
In the seventh, with the lead 5-1, Maksim led off with a single and later scored when a Wilkes infielder dropped a pop fly. Maksim drove in BCC’s final two runs with two outs in the eighth, singling to short center field. He drove in Corbett, who was safe on an error, and Brendle, who had doubled.
In the second game, Wilkes scored two runs in the seventh to tie the score 5-5, forcing extra innings. The second run scored with two outs on a throwing error during a steal. Wilkes scored the winning runs in the ninth against reliever Kyle Shields.
BCC finished with eight hits. Patrick Graham and Brett Fraley each had two hits.
