BCC wins opener in BCC Classic

SUPPLY—Johnston Community College missed a score-tying 3-pointer in the final seconds as Brunswick Community College beat JCC 80-77 Saturday in the BCC Classic at the Dinah E Gore Fitness & Aquatics Center.

Four Dolphins scored at least 11 points in the victory: Chris Smith, 16; Terneil Rhodes, 15; Alan-Michael Thompson, 12; freshman Steve Johnson, 11.

A fast-break layup by Lattrell Royster put BCC ahead 64-49 with 10 minutes, 25 seconds left. The lead was 70-51 with 8:35 left, but JCC outscored the Dolphins 21-5 in cutting the BCC lead to 75-72 with 65 seconds left.

Smith hit two free throws with 60 seconds left, and then Nequan Melvin blocked a shot. A free throw by Rhodes put BCC ahead 78-72 with 44.2 seconds left.

JCC hit a field goal and a 3-pointer in cutting the lead to 79-77 with 16.8 seconds left.

A free by Devon Atkinson with 13.8 seconds left was the final point for BCC. JCC then missed the 3-pointer.

The Dolphins trailed 7-4 in the first half but took a 16-11 lead on a score by Johnson off a bounce pass from Brad Knox. A basket by Smith off an inbounds pass put BCC ahead 30-17 with 7 minutes left in the half. BCC led 44-32 at the half.
