BCC women defeat Rockingham

 The Brunswick Community College women’s basketball team beat winless Rockingham Community College 85-50 in a non-region game Friday at the Dinah E. Gore Fitness & Aquatics Center gym.


Freshman Monica Smalls scored 17 points and freshman Kima Sidberry scored 15 as the Dolphins improved to 2-1. Sophomore Tyesha McLean and freshman Kenedra Smith each scored 11 points.

Rockingham is an NJCAA Division III team that entered the game 0-6 and had given up 85 or more points in four of the losses.

BCC led 21-17 in the first half when it outscored the Eagles 8-0 in fewer than 60 seconds. Smalls began the run when she scored and was fouled. She missed the free throw but Jennette Taylor got the rebound, was fouled and made two free throws. McLean hit a short jumper and Smalls sank a turnaround, putting the Dolphins ahead 29-17. BCC maintained a lead the rest of the half, which ended 34-26.

The Dolphins clinched the victory early in the second half. A baseline layup by Syerra Troutman began a 9-0 run that put BCC ahead 45-30 with 16:14 left. After Shanita Hampton hit a free throw, Smalls scored and was fouled. She missed the free throw but Crystal Hicks grabbed the rebound and Smalls again scored. Hicks then hit a jumper from the right wing for the 15-point lead.

BCC went on to outscore the Eagles 27-10 in the first 10 minutes of the second half in taking a 61-36 lead.
