David Stackhouse from Southport won the boys’ 16s singles tournament at the first Brunswick County Junior Tennis Open last weekend at the Ocean Isle Beach Park Tennis Center.
The event was the first USTA-sanctioned junior tourney in the county and drew more than 55 players. Brunswick County Tennis Association, Sunset Properties, D&D Tennis and Papa Johns sponsored the tourney. Joan Cox was tournament referee and Ron Watts was tournament director.
“This was a good first effort for us,” Watts said.  “We dodged several rainstorms over the weekend, but got all of the play in with everyone’s help. Most of the players were from outside of the area, and based on their comments, I would expect that the tournament will grow next year.”
Money raised will go toward a fund for a new backboard at the park.
