SUNSET BEACH—A diverse group of 30 citizens and town employees took part in the town’s inaugural Beautification Day on April 9.
Starting at 10 a.m. and toiling for about four hours, the group worked on a variety of projects to enhance the appearance of the community.
Applying a wide variety of talents, they succeeded in transforming the appearance of the much-maligned median of the public parking lot at the beach. They created a desert landscape using boulders, century plants, cactus, yucca and ornamental grasses all set in sand.
The desert landscaping is designed to minimize the need for irrigation and simplify maintenance, while significantly improving eye appeal for those who enjoy our beach. Parking space striping also was repainted.
Work teams also landscaped the new town’s new welcome sign site on N.C. 904 and provided necessary TLC to the mainland medians at the bridge entrance.
Weeds were eliminated and flower beds edged. Soon, mulch will be added to freshen their appearance.
Participants went home a little bit tired but proud and satisfied with what they accomplished as a team.
