A beaver is being blamed for the washout of portions of Sunset Harbor Road on Saturday morning, May 24.

The beaver blocked a culvert running under the road near the junction with Retreat Street SE, which is located near Winding River Plantation in Supply, causing a massive sinkhole about 20 feet wide and 10 feet deep dividing two sections of the road.

The damage was discovered about 7 a.m. Saturday, May 24, North Carolina State Highway Patrol Trooper K.E. Herring said.

North Carolina Department of Transportation crews fixed the road, but it was closed through Memorial Day weekend, Herring said. Residents entering or leaving Sunset Harbor from N.C. 211 were forced to use Zion Hill Road for access.
