BEMC to award scholarships to area seniors

-A A +A

For the third year, Brunswick Electric Membership Corporation (BEMC) will again award two scholarships of $5,000 each to high school seniors in Brunswick and Columbus counties.

The awards are based on a combination of academic achievement, participation in community and school activities, SAT scores, letters of reference and a 1,500 word essay on “Renewable Energy: Jobs of the Future.”

Application packages are available through the guidance counselor at local high schools or the documents may be downloaded at www.bemc.org/CommunityPrograms/Scholarship. All applications must be submitted through the guidance counselor. Full details on eligibility and the application are available on the BEMC website (www.bemc.org) and in the packages at the schools. Deadline for submission is March 31.

“The BEMC Scholarship Program was developed to add another dimension to our commitment to education,” said Judy Gore, VP of customer service at BEMC. “It provides help to students going beyond high school who have likely benefited from one of our other programs: Bright Ideas educational grants for teachers, “Get Charged” learning materials for science classes or “Super Energy Savers” materials for elementary students.”

Prior winners of BEMC scholarships are: (2009) Brianna Clifton of Whiteville, attending UNCW, and Jason Grafius of Leland, attending NCSU; and (2010) Rebecca Sidelinger of Shallotte, now at UNC-Charlotte, and Anna Fairfax of Chadbourn, now studying at Duke University.
