Brunswick Electric Membership Corporation (BEMC) invites local agencies and groups to apply for a 2011 BEMC Community Grant.

Now in its ninth year, the program provides grants to groups that provide family services programs, civic and community programs, cultural and arts programs, emergency services or community development activities.

Since inception, the grants program has awarded nearly $200,000 to more than 125 projects benefiting citizens all over the area.

Grants range from $500-$2,500 and are made to organizations, not to individuals. Prior grants have covered a wide range of programs, from building ramps for senior citizens, to environmental education programs, safety gear, youth and family counseling services, support for food pantries, Habitat for Humanity projects, summer and after-school programs for kids, literacy program supplies, library equipment, support for the homeless, hospice programs, renovations at a senior center, farmers market upgrades, parks and recreation equipment and much more.

“BEMC Community Grants are one of the ways we extend a helping hand to our community,” said Robert W. Leavitt Jr. CEO of BEMC. “In these tough economic times, our strong ties to the community are more important than ever.”

Applications for 2011 BEMC Community Grants will be accepted through Feb. 15. Guidelines and application forms are available at any BEMC office or on its website at www.bemc.org.
