Shallotte Lions reached out this month to the Brunswick Interagency Program (BIP) at Brunswick Community College. BIP Director Greg Bland spoke about the program’s mission at the March 7 meeting of the Shallotte Lions Club.
The innovative program, founded in 1985, provides comprehensive educational and vocational training to help developmentally disabled adults reach their full potential and independence. Practical instruction is offered in community living, health and wellness, basic literacy, vocational education, social science, leisure skills, problem solving and more. Students participate in activities that build friendships as well as skills.
Many students also gain on-the-job training through BIP’s Supported Employment Project. Students work both in the community and on campus, serving on grounds maintenance, food service, custodial and greenhouse crews. Prom night is the social highlight of the year for students.
Lions International is the world’s largest service club organization, with 1.3 million members in 207 countries. The Shallotte Lions Club is known for its work with the visually-impaired and with children. Meetings are the first and third Thursday of each month at Vision Square Eye Care, 4830 Main St. in Shallotte.
