Wes Knox, of Bolivia, finished first in the 26th annual Sudan Daredevils Flounder Tournament. He caught a 29.77-inch flounder that weighed 11.14 pounds. He won $1,500.
The Sudan Daredevils of the South Brunswick Islands Shrine Club put on the tournament, which took place Friday and Saturday. Awards were handed out Saturday night at the Shallotte Point Volunteer Fire Department.
Twenty-eight county children are receiving free care from the Shriners, who dedicated this tournament to Vernon Ward.
Tyler Lancaster, of Ocean Isle Beach, was second with a 27-inch flounder that weighed 7.85 pounds. He won $1,000.
Blake Stone, of Shallotte, was third with a five-fish total of 21.26 pounds. He won $600.
Tim Parnell, of Lumberton, was fourth with a 25.25-inch flounder that weighed 7.73 pounds. He won $500.
Randy Robinson, of Leland, finished fifth with the fourth-largest flounder, 6.93 pounds. He won $400.
Mike Fields, of Supply, finished sixth with the fifth-largest flounder, 23.25 inches and 5.85 pounds. He won $200.
Ola Bea Lefler won the Edith Pigott Lady Angler Prize ($500). Her flounder was 5.47 pounds and 23 inches. The award was sponsored by Guy C. Lee and Co.
The Senior Angler Award went to the crew of Danny Fitzgerald, Jeff Cecil and Scott Cecil, all of High Point, and was worth $200. The flounder weighed 2.31 pounds. The award was in memory of Billy Lefler Sr. It was sponsored by the Lefler family.
The Child Friday Award went to Austin Shaver for his 4.05-pound flounder. He won $50. The Child Saturday Award went to Jake Starnes for his 2.93-pound flounder. He won $50. Both were awarded in the memory of Billy Tripp and sponsored by Marilyn Tripp and family.
The special weights, worth $125 each, were awarded as follows: for 1.38 (1.37 actual), Eric Bruce; for 3.0 (actual 3.03), Gilbert DuBois, of Carolina Beach; for 1.51 (actual 1.50) Jon Edwards, of Maxton. All were awarded in memory of Ronnie Tripp.
Ninety-four boats fished in the tournament. The total weight off the flounder caught Friday was 269.21 pounds. The total weight of the flounder caught Sunday was 218.15 pounds, bringing the total to 487.36 pounds.
