The Brunswick Dixie Boys Baseball team (14-year-olds) began action Sunday in an eight-team tournament and lost 9-4 to Hope Mills.
On Monday, Brunswick beat Bladen County 9-5 in a loser-out game. Winning pitcher Andrew Phillips gave up two runs and seven hits in six innings. He walked one and hit one. He struck out five.
Brunswick scored four runs in the top of the first. After Cameron Fields walked and Trey Parrish was awarded first on catcher’s interference, Brandon Wehrly doubled home a run and designated hitter Alex Mercer singled home two runs. The fourth run scored on a groundout by Clay Vansteen.
Bladen scored its only runs in the bottom of the first.
Brunswick scored in the second when Fields led off with a double and later scored on a groundout by Parrish.
In the fifth, Brunswick loaded the bases when Vansteen and Christopher Hitch walked and Kaison Medford was safe on an error. A run scored on a wild pitch when Fields was batting.
Brunswick scored three runs in the seventh. A singled by Mercer scored one of the runs. The two other runs scored on an errant throw during a steal of third base and a two-out dropped third strike when Vansteen was batting.
Bladen scored its final runs on a three-run home run in the bottom of the seventh.
The tourney is scheduled to end July 18. The winner advances to the World Series, set for Aug. 3-7 in Seneca, S.C.
