When: 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 13

Where: Brunswick County Animal Protective Services, 429 Green Swamp Road (N.C. 211)

SUPPLY—Sgt. Tommy Tolley is like a kid in a candy store as he shows off the newly refurbished pet rooms at Brunswick County Animal Protective Services.

The former overseer of the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office’s K-9 program is now serving as director of the shelter on Green Swamp Road.

Changes have occurred since the sheriff’s office took over management of the facility in July, including installation of a new cat room where volunteers can come and play with and socialize cats and kittens available for adoption.

“This was an old storage area,” Tolley said as volunteer Sandy Fisser sat on the floor waving a feather-toy at a playful kitten.

The cats used to be out in the hall in cages all by themselves. Now, he said, volunteers can come and visit with the kitties to give them some exercise and make them more adoptable.

In the shelter’s pet-bathing room, Tolley greeted professional groomer Val Hernon of Wags & Whiskers of Shallotte and Hernon’s daughter, Amy Mewborn, as they bathed a springer spaniel that had just been brought in as a stray.

Hernon said the dog had golf-ball-sized matting on its ears until she and Mewborn got ahold of her to give her a good grooming.

Another volunteer, Wendy Kent, played with two Feist puppies inside the redecorated pre-adoption room.

Saturday, visitors have a chance to see all these changes that have occurred at the shelter during Brunswick County Animal Protective Services’ Grand Re-Opening. It’s taking place from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Oct. 13.

“It is a grand re-opening adoption fair and [chance] for the community just to come out and see the shelter,” Tolley said. “We hope all our adoptable dogs and cats are [adopted] that day.”

The main thing is “we just want everybody to come see how far we’ve come since July 1,” Tolley said.

Everyone is welcome—and everyone is welcome to find come and match up with their purr-fect, fur-ever friends, too, Tolley said.
