The U.S. Department of Agriculture declared Brunswick County a primary natural disaster area because of excessive rain and flooding that damaged crops.
Brunswick is one of 13 counties in North Carolina included in the declaration, which cites damages and losses caused by the wet weather that began May 1 and continues, according to a news release.
Such declarations are typically issued when farmers report at least a 30 percent loss in a major crop, said Coke Gray, USDA Farm Service Agency Executive Director for Brunswick and Columbus counties.
