Businesses beware: Counterfeit currency circulating

-A A +A

The South End Task Force (SETF) has wrapped up a string of cases involving counterfeit currency, which affected businesses in Shallotte, Ocean Isle Beach and Brunswick Community College.

Two arrests have been made and computers and printers have been seized by the SETF.

The United States Secret Service has been notified. State charges have been filed against two people who are the main suspects of printing counterfeit currency.

Local businesses are warned to be on the look out for these counterfeit bills. The flaw in these bills is a red ink mark on the head of Andrew Jackson and a grey discoloration around the edges on the back of the $20 bills.

There is about a $1,000 of counterfeit $20 bills in circulation at this time.

The investigators are Sgt. Edwin Marti for Shallotte, Det. Adam Stanley for Brunswick County, Ken Bellamy, assistant chief for Ocean Isle Beach, and Lindsay Walton, chief for Brunswick Community College.

Anyone with information is asked to contact their local law enforcement.
