Anyone who has ever experienced the unconditional love and devotion of a pet also knows the devastating heartbreak of that final goodbye.
Brunswick County Sheriff’s Animal Protective Services has seen a need to have a quiet place outside, a memorial garden away from the bustle of the animal shelter on Green Swamp Road.
The future pet memorial garden would serve as a place where owners can say goodbye after losing a pet.
Because funding from the county and animal rescue groups must be used for animals at the shelter, the garden must be privately funded.
It is hoped businesses will supply donations. Work will be done by the shelter’s terrific team of volunteers, along with Brunswick Master Gardener volunteers and the county inmate work crew.
Help from the public will still be needed. To fund the project, plans call for installation of a brick pathway leading to a fountain. Bricks can be engraved with memorials to past pets, honorariums to present pets or favorite people, or a business name.
Bricks will be sold for $75 each. That includes all shipping to the shelter, installation, and a certificate with a picture of each donor brick for an additional $25.
Donors will receive a felt-lined display brick on an easel for home or office.
All net profits will be used for the garden and for other needs the shelter has such as new flooring for the dog area. Donations are tax-deductible.
