Calabash VFW plays annual golf tourney

-A A +A

Nov. 19 was not a good day for golf but that didn’t hinder the 128 participants in Calabash VFW Post 7288’s annual tournament at Sea Trail’s Byrd Course. The day was cloudy with a wind gusting to more than 25 mph all morning and the temperature in the mid-40s at tee time.
With a wind chill dipping into the 20s, one golfer said, “If this were not for such a good cause, I wouldn’t be here.”
The sentiment was shared by all of the golfers because the tourney proceeds went to Wounded Warriors, a program committed to helping U.S. troops adjust to life back home after suffering the wounds of war.
Earning top honors in the first flight were Jon Denny and Bob Halpin. Winners in the second flight were Hank Beuke and Stan Kwansy.
Winners in the mixed flight were Al Jackson and his wife, Pat. After the chilling round of golf, the players returned to the Calabash VFW for a hearty hot lunch and prize presentations.
