Champion hoping for healthy senior season at Pembroke

It’s been almost two years since Stuart Champion’s left knee and baseball career took a dramatic twist.

While practicing one day with his Louisburg College teammates, Champion came up out of his catcher’s stance to throw the ball to second base. It’s a throw he’d made hundreds of times during a lifetime in baseball.

Only this time, when he stepped on a slippery home plate, his left knee gave way. He hyper-extended it and partially tore the meniscus, a piece of cartilage in the joint.
