Church league begins tournament

Shallotte First, Liberty Tabernacle, Jennies Branch and New Beginnings notched victories March 17 as the Brunswick County men’s church league began its season-ending double elimination tournament.

Richie Caison had 21 points for Shallotte First, and David Batten added 14 in a 56-28 victory against Sharon Methodist. Chris Stanley led Sharon Methodist with 13 points.

Willis Stevenson had 25 points and Kendrick Frink 23 as Liberty Tabernacle whipped Beach Assembly 93-41. Todd Summerlin led Beach Assembly with 11 points and Corey Brown had 10.

Jennies Branch beat Mount Olive 61-48 as Andrew Stephens had 24 points and Brandon Stephens 22. Bradley Ricker led Mount Olive with 17 points and Chad Dillahay added 13.

New Beginnings defeated Ocean View 65-35 behind the 13 points from Duane Marlowe. Dennis Powers had 12. Adam Melton led Ocean View with 13 points with Steve Randone getting 12.

Mount Calvary was accorded the No. 1 seed with Pleasant View the No. 2.

Tournament play continued Tuesday night with games also scheduled for Thursday and Monday.


• Mount Calvary 63, Pleasant View 54: Maurice Finch had 18 points and McReese Vereen 14 for Mount Calvary. Mario Williams and Jarrett Wallace each had 10 points for Pleasant View.

• Shallotte Presbyterian 42, Sharon Methodist 37: Ryan Smithwick led Shallotte Presbyterian with 14 points and Scott Cannon had 10. Justin Benoy had 11 points for Sharon Methodist with Chris Strahley getting 10.


• Pleasant View 62, New Beginnings 56: Josh Brown had 19 points and Jermaine Morris 18 for Pleasant View. John Surigao topped New Beginnings with 15 points with Tim Mokma scoring 10.

•Jennies Branch 60, Sharon Methodist 46: Brandon Stephens scored 18 points for Jennies Branch with Andrew Stephens getting 16. Chris Strahley led Sharon Methodist with 11 with Justin Benoy getting 10.

• Ocean View 41, Shallotte First 39: Adam Melton had 16 points and Steve Randone 15 for Ocean View. David Batten scored 14 points for Shallotte First with Keith Dycus getting eight.


• Mount Calvary 63, New Beginnings 60: McReese Vereen had 25 points and Maurice finch 16 for Mount Calvary. Tim Mokma and Duane Marlowe each had 20 points for New Beginnings.

• Beach Assembly 54, Ocean View 46: Brad Lewis led Beach Assembly with 19 points. Jay Lack had 14. Adam Melton was the leading scorer for Ocean View with 19 points with Justin White scoring 11.

• Pleasant View 78, Sharon Methodist 41: Jermaine Morris had 23 points and Josh Brown 18 for Pleasant View. Chris Strahley led Sharon Methodist with 13 points with Jimmy St. George getting 10.
