CIS awards 23 scholarhips to area students

Communities in Schools (CIS) has awarded 23 $1,000 scholarships to Brunswick County students this year, and five are the first in their family to attend college. This brings the total amount of scholarships awarded by CIS to more than $100,000.
Early College High School graduate Shanice Newkirk received a $1,000 scholarship donated by Dinah Gore.
At South Brunswick High School, Matt and Elizabeth Scharf presented their scholarship to Erika Briggs. John and Patricia Fisher presented their scholarship to Christine Guseman. Kenneth Shadid was awarded a scholarship for participation in Teen Court. Darien Hewett’s scholarship was donated by the Labor Day Surf-Off in memory of Teddy Hiatt. Elsye Sulky’s was in memory of Linda DeZurick Erickson. Joan Madsen, Tom Cavanaugh and Dr. Daniel Blizzard sponsored scholarships for Sara Crismann, Miranda Perce and Tyler Wittkofsky.
North Brunswick High School graduates Tikenya McNeil, Mason Roberts, Christopher Slator and Kiana Williams each received $1,000 scholarships sponsored by the Young Again Foundation. Attendees of the Benefit Gala for Children donated funds for Taylor Benson, Christopher Diaz and Steven Linkous to each receive scholarships.
At West Brunswick High School, Mathew Emerson received a scholarship in honor of Jean and Bill Russ; Kaylee Johnson’s was in memory of Rebecca Jean Russ. Mary Amron Lee was awarded a scholarship in honor of Jacob Michael Judge. Cindy Hauman, David and Penny Redwine and the 2nd Street Bar and Grill donated scholarships for William Edwards, Courtney Turner and Madison White.
At Brunswick County Academy, a $1,000 scholarship was awarded to Kendra Bryant. Dominique Marlow received $200 donated by the Labor Day Surf-Off.
CIS partners with local businesses, industries, civic clubs, agencies, communities of faith and individuals to provide scholarship funds.
