CIS, programs are valuable to Brunswick County

-A A +A

Communities in Schools is a unique program that benefits students throughout Brunswick County.

From academic assistance to counseling and everything in between, CIS utilizes community resources—such as businesses and local volunteers—to help provide young people with the tools they need to succeed in school and to prepare them for the rest of their lives.

CIS programs are funded from a variety of resources including grants and contributions from national, state and local government agencies, and of course, the community.

From business partnerships to fundraising events like the annual gala for children, CIS volunteers and staff are constantly working to find creative ways to keep children involved in school, while doing so on an ever-decreasing budget.

In the past three years, officials with the local CIS estimate the organization has lost more than $1 million in funding. Another $300,000 may be taken away from its coffers during the 2011-2012 fiscal year.

While its budget continues to decrease, Communities in Schools services are continually needed. To continue to help Brunswick County students be successful in school and in life, CIS needs you.

The program is in need of volunteers for a variety of activities, some that work directly with students, some that do not. The program could also use donations to help continue services.
