Seniors to meet Oct. 8
Holden Beach Senior Citizens will meet at the Lockwood Folly Community Building on Stanbury Road at 6 p.m. Oct. 8. Bring food to complement the cookout.
There will be prizes for bingo. For the meeting, be sure to bring cans for personal use, labels and points for Shallotte Middle School, stamps for missionaries overseas and coupons for veterans.
Remember to bring non-perishable foods for a local food bank. Reservations will be taken for the trip to Templewood in Fayetteville on Oct. 19. Cost is $15 per person and includes a meal.
Newcomers club to meet Oct. 11
The Southwest Brunswick Newcomers Club (SWBNC) will meet from 10 a.m.-noon Thursday, Oct. 11, in the fellowship hall of Shallotte Presbyterian Church, 5070 MH Rourk Drive in Shallotte. Doors will open at
9:30 a.m. for new members to join and to signup for scheduled recurring activities and special planned events.
Guest speaker will be Pat Kirkman, who will present a history of Southport.

Meetings take place on the second Thursday of the month through May 2013.
DAR to meet Oct. 10
The Brunswick Town Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution will meet at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 10, in the fellowship hall at Trinity United Methodist Church, 209 East Nash St. in Southport.
Jim McKee, historian at Brunswick Town/Fort Fisher Historic Site, will give a presentation on Fort Johnston and the War of 1812. Make plans to attend Southport’s three-day celebration to mark the occasion 200 years after the War of 1812.
McKee will also speak at 10 a.m. at the symposium on Oct. 20. A $10 registration fee includes lunch. The program is sponsored by the N.C. War of 1812 Bicentennial Committee, N.C. Division of State Historic Sites, the City of Southport and the Lower Cape Fear in the War of 1812 Committee.

Genealogy program set for Oct. 9
There will be a program on genealogy at Hickmans Crossroads Library beginning at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 9.
This is an organizational meeting for those interested in learning about genealogy. Groups will be formed depending on interest. Verna Johnson of the Church of Latter-day Saints’ family history staff in Shallotte will be available to lend her expertise.
