NARFE to meet March 12
The National Active and Retired Federal Employees (NARFE) Association, Brunswick County Chapter 1894, will meet at noon Tuesday, March 12, at The Dead End Saloon Fish Factory Grill, 4907 Fish Factory Road, South Harbor Village, in Southport.
Guest speaker will be Capt. Marybeth Ray of the NCDOT Southport-to-Fort Fisher Ferry Service. She will discuss her experiences as a U.S. Navy contractor supporting torpedo recovery and target retrieval, and her life on the water, including her experiences as a ferry captain. All members are urged to attend.

Camera club plans March 12 meeting
The March 12 meeting of the Coastal Carolina Camera Club will feature a program of image critiquing: “How to make an image better.”
Members will divide into groups and be given a print image to review, and together, they will suggest changes to improve that photograph. Afterwards, the photographs will be edited on-screen showing those changes. This is a great opportunity to learn and experience the methods and techniques of how to improve photographs.
The club meets at 7 p.m. monthly every second Tuesday at Shallotte Presbyterian Church, 5070 Main St. Shallotte. Membership is open to photographers of all skill levels using both film and digital cameras. Meetings consist of informative programs on photographic techniques and software usage, member photo presentations and critiques, guest speakers and more. Guests are always welcome.

Holden Beach Seniors to meet March 11
Holden Beach Senior Citizens will meet at 6 p.m. March 11 at the Lockwood Folly Community Building on Stanbury Road. Come and enjoy a covered-dish meal.
Program planning and activities will be discussed for the coming year. Remember to bring labels, stamps, cans and non-perishable foods for a local food bank, along with items for veterans.
Democrats to have precinct meetings
The North Carolina Democratic Party will have annual precinct organizational meetings in Brunswick County at the following locations:
Southport No. 2 Precinct will meet at 6:30 p.m. March 5 at the International Longshoreman Hall (ILA) conference room.
Meetings are free and open to any registered Democrat residing in the precinct. Attendees will be electing delegates to the Brunswick County convention on April 20 at Brunswick County Democratic Headquarters in Bolivia.
Unless contacted by your precinct leader, arrangements are made for all other Brunswick County precincts to meet at 6:30 p.m. March 14 at Brunswick County Democratic Headquarters in Bolivia.
Elks to have police, firemen banquet
Shallotte Elks Lodge will have its annual Police and Firemen of the Year banquet on March 8 at the lodge at 791 Bricklanding Road (N.C. 179). The menu will consists of meatloaf, mash potatoes, green beans, salad and dessert. Cost is $8 a person and is open to the public.

SOBS to shag March 8
The Society of Brunswick Shaggers will host their 20th anniversary dance from 6:30-10 p.m. Friday, March 8, at the VFW Post, SE 50th St. on Oak Island. Joey Warren will be the deejay. Dancers are asked to wear green in honor of St. Patrick’s Day. Admission is $3 for SOBS and other shag club members and $6 for guests.
Woodturners to meet March 9
The Wilmington Area Woodturners Association will have its monthly meeting from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. March 9 at St Mark’s Catholic Church on Eastwood Road in Wilmington.
The meeting will feature master turner Andi Wolfe, who will demonstrate surface texturing with pyrography, carving techniques and a slide show on 3D carving and coloring methods. The public is welcome.
Cost is $20 for WAWA members and $25 for non-members.
