Brunswick County Schools/Brunswick Community College Tech Prep (CTP) Consortium members are honored with three awards for excellence presented March 5 at the 2008 College Tech Prep Conference in Greensboro.

Statewide, only 15 winners were chosen.

The three awards for excellence were: the Platinum level award for Overall Excellence in College Tech Prep; the Platinum level award for Promotion of College Tech Prep; and the Platinum level award for College Tech Prep Worksite Learning categories of the Grimsley, James, Stogner Awards for Excellence in North Carolina College Tech Prep.

The awards recognize outstanding effort in:

Overall College Tech Prep Award

This award recognizes the consortium that has used multiple reform initiatives to produce the following: a high percentage of student participation in College Tech Prep, lowered dropout and remediation rates, sequenced courses from high school to the community college, integrated curricula and involvement of all stakeholders.

Promotion of College Tech Prep

This award recognizes clear and effective efforts by schools, colleges, and/or business and industry to promote and disseminate information about their CTP Program (plans, goals, successes, or projects). It also recognizes the best efforts in marketing to all stakeholders.

College Tech Prep Worksite Learning

Consortia that have demonstrated sound approaches in expanding the classroom through work-based learning are eligible.

Sites have applied competencies from the traditional classroom into the work place; faculty and businesses have worked together to blend content and context to achieve greater student learning and improved business models through the integration of students into the workplace.

College Tech Prep is a course of study designed to meet the need for high school graduates to have more technically-oriented educational backgrounds.

Through a blending of high-level academic and vocational courses, College Tech Prep prepares students for the collegiate-level courses required by two-year community college programs. Participants in College Tech Prep are consortia consisting of at least one community college, one high school, and industry partners. College Tech Prep is funded through the Carl D. Perkins Vocational and Technical Education Act of 2006.

The Brunswick County College Tech Prep Consortium is a joint effort between Brunswick County Schools, Brunswick Community College, and local businesses. Its primary purpose is to enhance and expand College Tech Prep to develop students’ abilities, skills and knowledge in a way that will enable them to successfully enter into college, community college and/or the workforce with greater competence and to provide opportunities for all students to establish clear and realistic career goals.

Brunswick Community College is a public, two-year educational institution, chartered in 1979 and centrally located in Brunswick County, providing accessible and affordable programs and services that meet the educational and cultural needs of the community and providing opportunities for individuals to be successful.
