OCEAN ISLE BEACH—Construction has begun on The Landing at Ocean Isle Beach Shopping Center, a project three and a half years in the making.

Ground broke Thursday as Crescent Retail announced the start of construction on The Landing, a 65,000-square-foot shopping center at the corner of N.C. 179 and Ocean Isle Beach Road.

Lowes Foods will be the center’s anchor tenant. The 42,000-square-foot shopping center is scheduled to open in May 2009. Terry Moore, director of marketing and e-Commerce at Lowes Foods, said the store would be larger than but similar to the Calabash/Little River, S.C., location.

“Lowes is excited to be part of the Ocean Isle Beach community,” Moore said.

Moore said the store is looking to hire “local talent,” and give back to the community as much as possible.

“We know long term it’s a great place,” he said.

Mayor Debbie Smith said Lowes is one of her “favorite” grocery stores, and she cannot wait to have the store “in our backyards.”

“We always welcome and like to have fine developers in our area,” Smith said.

An additional 11,000 square feet of retail space will open along with Lowes Foods during the first phase of development.

Another 12,000 square feet and six outparcels on more than seven acres will be built in a later phase.
