Contest benefits art gallery

Those with a sharp eye for public gardens will have a chance to win one of three photographic prizes at Franklin Square Gallery on April 5 during the monthly Gallery Walk in downtown Southport.
Visitors will be asked to make a donation and then guess where the photo was taken in Southport.
One of the prizes is a book of photos from Orton Plantation; another is a collage of eight photos of azaleas taken at a public location in Southport; and the third is a collage of photos taken at Orton Plantation.
Photographer John Keilman of Southport has donated the prizes and will have about a dozen photographs on view. He took the photos from 2006 to 2010.
“I was drawn back to the amazing beauty of Orton Plantation and wanted to see if changing to digital photography could better capture that incredible display,” said Keilman, who considers himself an amateur photographer and concentrates primarily on landscapes and seascapes.
He hopes the display and prizes will encourage people to appreciate and enjoy the beautiful public gardens in town, which should be in bloom now through mid-late April, depending on the weather.
Proceeds from the contest will be used to support Kids’ Day in the Park, sponsored by Associated Artists of Southport. The public is invited to the monthly First Friday Gallery Walk at 130 E. West St., behind Franklin Square Park in Southport.
