Brunswick County commissioners gave finance director Ann Hardy double duty by appointing her special assistant to the county manager until county manager Marty Lawing departs for Guilford County.

Lawing accepted an offer March 22 to take the manager’s role with Guilford County.

Commissioners voted for the special designation at their agenda meeting March 27.

The board decided it wanted Hardy in place to step in as interim manager, but will hold off on that transition until after Lawing has moved on.

Lawing begins his new job in Guilford County on May 6. He has said he intends to work for Brunswick County until May 3.

Commissioners will have to vote again to select Hardy as interim manager when the time comes.

“At that time we expect to appoint her as interim manager,” chairman Phil Norris said.

“I’ll work with her over the next four weeks to get her up to speed,” Lawing said after Monday’s county meeting.

Norris said it is the consensus of the board to advertise the county manager position outside Brunswick County, but he anticipates commissioners will receive good applicants from in and out of the county.

“We may hire a search firm to assist with that,” Norris added.

Norris said one reason to designate Hardy as an assistant to the county manager is due to the manager transition taking place in the middle of budget planning.

“It’s budget time, and that is one issue. It’s a bit of a double-edged sword,” Norris said of adding duties onto the finance director while preparing the budget.

“She’s assured us it will not be a problem,” he said.
