Dixie Angels win openers in state tourney

The Brunswick County Dixie Angels softball team (ages 9-10) won its first two games in the state tournament in Eden.
Brunswick beat Reidsville 11-0 on Saturday night. Amanda Phillips was the winning pitcher. She pitched two innings. Savannah Branch and Katelyn Fulford pitched one each. The girls combined on a no-hitter. Katelyn Fulford had two hits. Branch, Catherine Grainger and Savannah Richmond each had hits.
On Sunday, West Brunswick beat West Stanly 4-1. Branch was the winning pitcher, throwing two scoreless innings. Fulford also threw two innings and Philips came in and closed the game.
Branch had two hits. Fulford, Morgan Barbee and Jenna Caison added a hit.
“The girls are playing well and having a great time,” coach Wayne Branch said.
The tourney is set to end July 18. The winner advances to the World Series later this month in Georgetown, S.C.
