To the editor: This is pertaining to the selection of players in minor and major league Dixie Youth All-Stars.
At the end of this year, some of those chosen were sons of coaches or possibly sponsors of the team, and it showed. Quality 12-year-old players who have hit home runs and played every position on the field with intensity and enthusiasm are sitting home discouraged about the effort they put in this season because they were not selected and were replaced by players who are 11 years old and not as qualified and have not played all the games this season.
I understand players only have to play nine games to qualify, but that still does not give them the right to be elected as all-stars.
I believe the way coach pitch has selected its all-star team with try-outs is the way all Dixie Youth teams should be selected. Maybe in the near future the rules will change to reflect Coach Pitch.
To all that read this, don’t be afraid to voice your opinion to help make changes to the rules. Until these changes are made, I don’t believe we will have quality all-star teams. To all the kids sitting home who deserve to be all-stars, congratulations for an outstanding year of baseball. Many others and I know who you are. Don’t think people don’t notice. For those of you moving on to Dixie Boys or the middle school team, good luck, and we’ll see you on the diamond.
