Doesn't think jetties are the answer

People whose second homes are about to wash into the Atlantic must be going through a hellish mess only they can fully comprehend.

However, the proposed solution of building groins, jetties or hardened structures voiced by two individuals in the March 27 Brunswick Beacon is at odds with research on the subject.

To make sure all sides of this discussion are heard, I suggest reading “Against the Tide” by Cornelia Dean and the research by Orin Pilkey (Duke University). The tragic circumstances of individual homeowners seeking last-ditch solutions must be balanced with CAMA policies that protect the overall health of Carolina beaches for all of us.
