The St. James Service Club is now accepting donations for its annual flea market.
Dollar$ for $cholars is the theme of the 16th annual Flea Market sponsored by the St. James Service Club to be held Saturday, April 26, at Brunswick Community College.
Since January, the club has been collecting items and storing them at Sentry Storage at 4711 Southport Supply Road (N.C. 211, 1.5 miles west of Long Beach Road).
Weather permitting, every Monday afternoon between the hours of 2:30 and 4:30 service club members are accepting clean and gently used items. They will not take Christmas items, computers, printers, medical and exercise equipment, phones, TVs, textbooks older than 2009, framed posters, suitcases, art supplies or clothing.
Applications for scholarships that the service club will give to deserving Brunswick County seniors from flea market proceeds will be available from high school guidance counselors in Brunswick County Schools March 1.
Students have until March 21 to complete and return them to the counselors to be considered by the scholarship committee. Students with plans to further their education in a two- or four-year institution is eligible to apply.
In previous years, six $1,000-$2,000 scholarships have been awarded to in-need high school seniors who live in Brunswick County. Additional money is given to the nursing program at Brunswick Community College to help nursing students fund their education.
The service club has a nine-member scholarship committee that reads applications that have been submitted by all area guidance counselors and makes selection of deserving students.
