Dosher Memorial Hospital and New Hanover Regional Medical Center have announced the opening of Dosher Medical Plaza, 4222 Long Beach Road.

This new facility will bring state-of-the-art diagnostic imaging, laboratory services and a multi-specialty center closer to the residents of Oak Island, St. James and surrounding communities.

Scheduled to open in early August, Dosher Medical Plaza is the first facility built as a joint venture between Dosher Hospital and New Hanover Regional Medical Center. This partnership was formed in July 2006 to better meet the growing healthcare needs of Brunswick County.

Some successes this partnership realized over the past two years include (1) Dosher Hospital’s hospitalist program, (2) quicker transfer times for highly-acute patients and (3) the recruitment of new primary care and specialty physicians to the communities of Southport, Oak Island, St. James and Boiling Springs Lake.

While Dosher Medical Plaza will serve everyone, the new facility’s diagnostic imaging center will focus on the needs of women by offering digital mammography and DEXA bone density scans. Bone density scans are commonly used to diagnose osteoporosis, a condition that often affects women after menopause. Digital mammography is the latest technology and most effective tool for the early detection of breast cancer.

“We are especially excited about our new Specialty Center opening at Dosher Medical Plaza,” said Dan Jacobs, Dosher Hospital spokesperson. “This center brings needed physician specialists to our community—many of these specialists were previously only available by traveling to Wilmington.”

The Specialty Center offers Wilmington physicians, such as Atlantic Urology and Atlantic Orthopedics, the opportunity to see their patients in Brunswick County. This is also great news for Brunswick County residents, whose budgets are being stretched by high gas prices and could delay care because of the cost of driving to Wilmington.
