The February 2010 issue of U.S. News & World Report magazine has named Dosher Nursing Center in Southport as “one of the best nursing homes in America.”
In all, only 173 skilled nursing facilities were named to the honor out of the nation’s thousands of nursing homes. Only four nursing home facilities received the designation in North Carolina.
Dosher Nursing Center is a part of Dosher Memorial Hospital. The 64-bed nursing center, which opened its doors in May 2000, provides southeast Brunswick County area residents with the necessary skilled-nursing services to attain and maintain physical, mental and psychological well-being.
Receiving around-the-clock nursing care, residents may require services such as IV therapy, blood transfusion and wound care. Residents may receive occupational therapy, physical therapy, speech therapy, diabetic counseling and recreational therapy as part of their plan of care.
In determining which facilities to include in the Best Nursing Homes list, a number of criteria were considered, such as health inspection results, amount of nursing care and performance in a range of quality measures.
In addition to its national nursing home recognition, the Dosher Nursing Center recently completed its third straight annual state inspection with no deficiencies.
“We were very pleasantly surprised by the national honor,” said Dosher Nursing Center Director Michele Lawrence. “The entire staff works so hard to make this a very special place for our residents to live. We all take a great deal of pride in the care we give and the extra things we do day in and day out. At Dosher Nursing Center, residents don’t live in our facility. We work in their home.”
