The coming year’s calendar for the other 18 Brunswick County schools provides a compromise for people who did not feel students should be in school at sites used for polling places on Election Day and those who felt the 10-week instructional stretch after the winter break needed to be broken up by a teacher workday March 13, 2015, according to a Brunswick County Schools news release. The new calendar meets both of those requests.

The school calendar is drafted for by a committee of parents and staff representing all 19 Brunswick County Schools, then sent to the board for review, schools spokeswoman Jessica Swencki said.

Originally, the calendar committee did not include a teacher workday on Election Day, but the board encouraged members of the committee to reconsider this because of concerns will parking and accessibility at the six schools which will double as polling sites Nov. 4.

Two teacher workdays had been built in around the Martin Luther King Jr. Day holiday, but the committee and the board reached a compromise to eliminate one of those workdays and permit workdays on Election Day and during the lengthy instructional period following winter break.

The first required teacher workdays are Aug. 20-22. The first day for students is Aug. 25.

The last scheduled day for students is June 10, 2015. Graduation for the four county high schools is slated for June 13, 2015.

The district has scheduled a pair of dates for parent-teacher conferences: Oct. 2 and Feb. 26, 2015.

At the end of this year, students will be released for annual leave Dec. 22 and return to school Jan. 5, 2015.

Report cards will be released Nov. 12, Jan. 28, 2015, and April 2, 2015.

Possible makeup days for Brunswick County Schools are Nov. 4, Jan. 20, 2015, March 13, 2015, May 1, 2015, and June 11, 2015.
