OCEAN ISLE BEACH—A fatal wreck in the early daylight hours of Thursday morning claimed the life of one Ocean Isle Beach man.
Glenn Edward Shepherd Jr, 57, of Ocean Isle Beach was killed when the moped he was driving was hit from behind by a vehicle.
According to Trooper Trent Chavis with the N.C. Highway Patrol, 19-year-old Blaire Whitney Anderson of Ocean Isle Beach was driving the vehicle that hit Shepherd from the back.
“The moped and the vehicle were travelling east on N.C. 179. The vehicle was behind the moped and struck the moped from behind,” Chavis said.
Shepherd was wearing a helmet at the time of the wreck. Neither alcohol nor drugs are thought to be factors in the wreck. It is not thought that Anderson was on her phone or texting when the wreck occurred.
Chavis said Anderson was on her way to school at an area community college when the wreck occurred around 7:15 a.m. near the intersection of Frink Street and N.C. 179 also known as Beach Drive.
“The sun blinded her first thing in the morning,” Chavis said. “She was driving to the east right into the sun.”
Anderson was charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle. Shepherd was pronounced dead at the scene.
Shepherd’s death is the second fatal wreck involving a moped in Brunswick County in 2013. On Feb. 4 Mark Mooring, 38, of Wilmington, was fatally injured while driving a moped on about one-mile from the Cape Fear Memorial Bridge.
Shepherd’s death marks the sixth fatal wreck in Brunswick County in 2013.
Ricky Banks Watts died on Monday, April 8, Teddy Long died on March 23, Cordell Bryant died on Jan. 15, Mooring died on Feb. 4 and Preston Maximin died on Feb. 7.
Last year there were 27 fatal wrecks in the county.
