A small strip mall on Carter Drive in the heart of Calabash was gutted by quickly spreading flames early Monday.
Firefighters were alerted to the fire at 12:20 a.m. and arrived on the scene in minutes.
Flames were already shooting through the roof of 947 Bistro & Pub (formerly known as Nesbitt’s Bar and Grill) and spread quickly to other adjoining businesses including Head Hunter Barber Shop, Calabash Florist, and Reflections Stained Glass.
Calabash firefighters were joined by the Sunset Beach and Grissettown fire departments in battling the blaze, but the small block of businesses was a total loss. There were no injuries, and the cause of the fire is still undetermined, Calabash Fire Department spokeswoman Honey Shore said.
Firefighting efforts were supported by Calabash EMS and Brunswick County EMS who stood by at the scene, and Ocean Isle Fire Department, which provided backup coverage for the area.
Calabash firefighters had just returned Sunday morning from assisting with a fire that destroyed 26 condominium buildings in the Carolina Forest community near Myrtle Beach, S.C.
