West and South played in a nonconference match April 9 at South’s home course at St. James Plantation.
The first group consisted of the best four golfers from both teams: Dalton Gore (South junior), Richard Weinacht (South junior), Harrison Taylor (West freshman) and Greg Hensley (West freshman). They played all 18 holes.
The remaining groups played only nine holes and their scores were doubled.
The match was significant because it was the first time male participants from The First Tee of Brunswick County played against each other at the high school level, which included all four golfers in the first group and a fifth golfer Keith Hopkins (West sophomore).
This statistic will steadily increase in years to come as more kids from The First Tee of Brunswick County, including the National School Program for elementary kids, start to swell the ranks of the middle and high school teams.
In the match, South beat West 328-364.
For South: Gore 73 (18 holes), Weinacht 81 (18 holes), Mitchell Brendel 82 nine holes doubled), Bradley Narron 92 (nine holes doubled).
For West: Jack Donoghue 88 (nine holes doubled), Hopkins 90 (nine holes doubled), Hensley 91 (18 holes), Taylor 95 (18 holes).
