Get ready for free, professional health screenings, chair massages, updated information—and lots of fabulous door prizes.
All of this and more will be showcased at Health Expo 2013, slated for 9 a.m.-2 p.m. next Saturday, Feb. 23, at West Brunswick High School. Admission is free.
Sponsored by The Brunswick Beacon, the seventh annual expo will feature more than 40 vendors and sponsors converging in the school gymnasium and elsewhere at the school on N.C. 130 (Whiteville Road), according to Christy Williamson, expo representative for the Beacon.
Free screenings this year will include cholesterol checks and screenings for blood pressure, stroke/cardiac risk assessment, DEXA (bone density) scans, computerized spinal and nervous system, vision and hearing, body-mass index (BMI), balance, glucose, dermatology, oxygen saturation, strength testing, oral cancer and digital intra-oral with computerized read-outs.
New this year is a family and parenting segment that will be set up in front of the gymnasium.
Infant and child CPR training will be available as well. To register in advance, email firstname.lastname@example.org.
Other highlights include four participating hospitals (Brunswick Novant, Dosher, Columbus, McLeod), Brunswick County Parks and Recreation, and the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office, which will conduct car seat safety checks.
The Health Occupations Student Association (HOSA) of WBHS will have a juvenile diabetes program this year.
Terri Mozingo, a registered dietician at Brunswick Novant Medical Center, will present a lecture on “Helping Parents Prevent Childhood Obesity.”
“We haven’t had one in a few years,” Williamson said of the scheduled lecture.
Once again this year, medication disposal will be available for anyone who would like to bring their unused medications of all types for free, safe disposal. Out-of-date or unwanted medications, controlled substances, prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, liquids, inhalers, vitamins and needles will all be accepted. The disposal program is jointly provided through Brunswick Novant Medical Center and the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office.
Free child care will be available during the expo.
Participating sponsors this year include New SouthBridge, Riverview Dental Associates, Arbor Landing at Ocean Isle, Sunset Slush, Woodmen of the World, Varnam Family Wellness, Little River Medical Center, Universal Healthcare and Vision Square Eyecare.
Food will be for sale from HOSA and Sunset Slush.
