Do you or someone you know need a hot meal on Christmas Day?
One local organization is uniting volunteers to make sure anyone in the area who has a need for a meal has a place to come.
Faith Building Missions (FBM) will pass out meals from noon-2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 25, in Rourk Gardens on Main Street in Shallotte.
A sit-down meal will be served at 4 p.m. at the Ocean View Family Life Center in Ocean Isle Beach.
“We are inviting everyone to come and pick up a hot Christmas meal,” said Dean Siler, FBM director. “The meals are for those in need or for people who are lonely on the holiday.”
The group is seeking participation from area churches to help deliver meals on Christmas Day.
“If a church wants to help serve or feed the needy, we welcome their participation,” Siler said. “If you want to help, come and give someone a blessing.”
Everyone is invited to participate, especially if you can help get food to those in need. FBM has been preparing Thanksgiving meals for the needy for the past six years; however, this year the meal will be on Christmas Day. Siler said in years past they have fed more than 1,000 people.
“This year we will be giving away free socks with the meals while supplies last,” Siler said.
The free, hot meal includes ham, scalloped potatoes, green beans, a roll and dessert. The plates passed out at Rourk Gardens will be served in to-go containers. Food will be kept warm until plates are picked up.
The group is prepared to feed 2,000 people but it needs help in distribution because it doesn’t have the capacity to deliver.
The meal is a mission outreach of several area churches working together. FBM is a “nonprofit organization committed to strengthening the faith of Christ-followers through exposure to mission outreach.”
The group officially formed in 2006.
One of its year-round projects is a soup kitchen. The program will start back up in January. Every Wednesday at 5 p.m. a free meal is offered to those in need at Ocean View Baptist Church.
Anyone interested in volunteering to help distribute the food to those in need on Christmas Day should call Siler at 755-6888. For more information on FBM, visit www.faithbuildingmissions.org.
