The Coastal Conservation Association, along with other organizations, has been battling with the State of North Carolina for several years now in hopes of getting more protection for many of our backwater species. Bill 983, which will provide game fish status for red drum and speckled trout, is supposed to be on the floor again this May. Game fish status for these two species will mean protection from commercial harvest. As of now, red drum are only allowed for commercial harvest as a bycatch provision.
