A cold start and a frost delay on the course limited the number of Sandpiper Bay Men’s Golf Association players Jan. 14, but play continued by switching games to Chicago. In spite of the weather, there were 33 players, enough for two flights.
Sand to Piper flight: John Murphy and Al Paynter each had a +4 and shared first. Third was a three-way tie at +3 among Don Moore, Ed Kilgoar and Dick Eby. Sixth went to Joe Cramer with a +2.
Bay to Sand flight: First with a +8—best score of the day—Guy Tavel. Second was a tie between Bob Eason and Phil Whittaker at +6. Fourth went to Tom Ioven at +5. Fifth was a +4 by Tony Hanna and John Hannigan.
On Jan. 12, game was the waltz. Sand to Piper flight: A -30 was the round of the day by Gordy Coulson, Vince Niland, Bob Arace and Otto Nelke. Second went to a -23 by Phil Whittaker, Jeff Smith, Guy Tavel and Frank Gajderowicz. Third belonged to Sam Milora, Al Bowman, John Grossglass and Bill Pohlman at -16.
Bay to Sand flight: A -18 took first by Bob Eason, Chuck Denny, Burnie Fowler and a blind draw. Second was a -16 was by the team of John Radziewski, Ron Yuricek, Lee Parker and Al Paynter. Third went to a -14 by John Whalen, Tom Townsend, Gary Pollock and Doug Williams.
Results of the Brierwood Men’s Golf Association tourney Jan. 12. In first at -18 was the team of Jim Robinson, Al Ostrager, Chuck Hornfeck and a blind draw. In second at 11 under was the team of Mike Prokop, Tom Bowen, George Edwards and a blind draw. In third at 7under was the team of Lew Henderson, Paul Salerno, Dick Baynton and Al Butler.
In the ladies golf league Jan. 12, the format was pick up partner, best ball of a twosome.

The Calabash VFW Golf League played its weekly modified Stableford match Jan. 12 at Meadowlands. First: Rod Rodriquez, Pete McGerr, Derwood Jackson and Bob Byrne at +12. Second: John Goss, John Koester, Larry Clark and Andy Ward at +8 1/2. Third + 1 1/2 were Chuck Murray, Bobby Poulton, Billy James and Randy Cogdill. At even in fourth were Tony Nye, Dave Enfeld, Richard Marnell and J.J. O’Donnell. Lee Harrison, Tommy Calvert, Tom Weller and Bob Champion were fifth at -2.
Twenty-nine of the 44 players participated in the skins game. J.J. O’Donnell had two skins. Larry Clark, Jim Milstead, Tom Weller, Chuck Lengyl and Bobby Poulton had one skin each.
On Jan. 12 at Farmstead, Ron Doeblin, Boomer Needham, John Methvin and Jody Serensits placed first by a match of cards with a 126. Format for the day was cha-cha-cha. Ned Meier, John Ducey, Hugh Chin and Cliff Musselman placed second.
On Jan. 14 at Meadowlands, Frank Janton, Jen Dearborn, Steve Maiorca and John Methvin placed first with a 123. Teams scored two nets per hole. Sid Pennington, Jerry Rubin, Boomer Needham and Cliff Musselman were second with a 128.
In the skins game Jan. 15 at Meadowlands, Sid Pennington won holes 1 and 8, Jen Dearborn holes 6 and 12, Bob Jaeger 5 and 15 and Joe Gallo holes 2, 9, 16 and 18.
GRAND STRAND SMGA
The Grand Strand Senior Men’s Golf Association played its weekly event Jan. 12 at Black Bear in Longs, S.C. The format is stroke play with handicap. Each flight is awarded a low-gross and low-net winner. This week it had 118 golfers, so there were six flights, A through F. All par 3s have closest-to-the-pin awards for white and gold tees. Third: Nancy Griffin, Janis Ortmeyer, Linda Bye and Phyllis Welch, 148.

BOB LARKIN II EAGLES
TIGER’S EYE 13th
Bob Larkin II eagled the 340-yard par-4 13th hole Jan. 14 at Tiger’s Eye. He teed off with a driver and holed-out an 8-iron shot from 130 yards.
PLAYERS GOLF ASSOCIATION
The team of Nick Samela, Wil Garvin, Jack Gorman and Bob Lange scored a 129 and won the weekly Players Golf Association tournament Jan. 15 at Farmstead Golf Course. The format was two low nets per hole.
Also with a 129 and tied for first but lost by a match of cards was the team of Ernie Weeks, George Griffin, Ernie Schober and Bill Kasper. Third with a 130 were Bill Favro, Roy Teasley, Dick Pearce and Bob Flack. Fourth at 133 were Jim Marsh, John McCloy, Ray O’Donnell and a blind draw. Closest to the pin were Nick Samela at No. 3, Ernie Weeks at No. 6, Dick Pearce at No. 12 and Jim Marsh at No. 17.
A game of low gross, low net was played by the Renegades Jan. 15 at Carolina Shores. Winners of low gross were Sharon Clark (95), Karen Hartling (104) and Kathy Hahl (105). Low-net winners were Sharon Clark (68), Karen Hartling (70) and Kathy Harniman (71). Fewest putts went to Sharon Clark with 29. Clark also chipped in on No. 11.
