The Beachcombers played at Brierwood. Captain’s choice was the game of the day. First at 7-under par were Hal Riebesehl, Bill Cameron, Ed Hennessey and Dennis Butler. Second at 6 under were Stu Cleveland, Fred Ortiz, Bob Brownley and Paul Michal. Third at 3 under were Bill McDavitt, Larry Bollinger and Jim Beairsto.
BRICK LANDING LGA
The Brick Landing Ladies Golf Association played a best-15 round for its Aug. 27 league day by throwing out the worst three holes and deducting one-half handicaps. Irene Dowdy was the winner of the first flight with a 52. Carol Fredericks came in second with a 59 and Kathy Koegel was third with a 62. The second-flight winner was Barbara Karkut with a 59. Peg Agrimonti was second with a 62 and Pat Baumgartner came in third with a 69. Peggy Campana won the third flight with a 65. Lois Huber took second with a 71 and Bernice Logan came in third with a 75.
Peggy Campana birdied No. 2 and Irene Dowdy posted a birdie on No. 9. Bernice Logan had a chip-in on No. 14.
MEN’S SPORTS CLUB
The weekly tournament was Aug. 25. The format was two best nets. In first was the team of Ed Lakey, Mike O’Brien, Chuck Dixon and Ted Lide at -30. Skins: Mike O’Brien and Al Zyga, two each; Bill Healy, one.
The shootout was Saturday. Jim Edes, Dwight Christenbury, Bill Fredericks and Alan Morrissey were first (+2.5 points). Gene Bonstein, Bob Gorman, Huck Dixon and Bob Grabb were second (+1.0 points). Glen Gayheart, John McGuirt, Owen Letter and a blind draw tied for third at -1.5 points with Bob Koegel, Mike O’Brien, Ted Lide and Mike Mattera.
Individually, Al Zyga and Mike O’Brien tied for first with +4.5 points. Bob Gorman was third with +3.0 points.
The team of Marianne Nobes, Carolyn Arney and Wayne McGlothlin finished first at even par in the Brierwood Wednesday mixed scramble Aug. 26. In second was the team of Deloris Gausch, Nancy McGlothlin and John Beavers. The team of Carola Hornfeck and Larry Boyer finished third. In fourth were Sharon Beavers, Chuck Hornfeck and Odie Johnson.
The format for the Brierwood Women’s Golf Association event Aug. 25 was odd holes minus one-half handicap. In flight 1, Betty Gabor and Cathy Clemmons tied for first low net with 29s. Betty Gabor had the fewest putts (27). In flight 2, first low net were Sara Baynton and Ruth Linder with 32s. Fewest putts were by Bynton (29). A birdie was made by Betty Gabor on No. 3.

On Aug. 26 at Meadowlands, Sid Pennington, Bob Jaeger, Jody Serensits and Joe Meo placed first with a 147. Format for the day was reverse cha-cha-cha. Jim Kennedy, Hugh Chinn, John Ogden and John Methvin placed second.
On Friday at Meadowlands, Ron Doeblin, Ned Meier, Ted Holcomb and Joe Gallo placed first with a 144. Teams scored two nets per hole. Placing second were John Ducey, Jen Dearborn, Sid Pennington and Cliff Musselman.
The Calabashers played golf at Cypress Bay Golf Course. Stableford was the format. The winning foursome was Woody Knox, Charlie Weber, Bill Miller and Mike McCormack. Its score was +8.5. The second foursome was Bill Bowden, Coach Dan, Rod Rodriguez and John Duthie at +8.

The Carolina Shores Niners played a tournament Aug. 20 at the Carolina Shores Golf Club. In the A flight, Joanne Riedel came in first in low gross and low net. In the B flight, Halla Cramer came in first and second in low gross and low net and Rose Mary Jones took second in both. Doris Pearce had the fewest putts (16). Halla Cramer had a chip-in on No. 8.
In the tournament on Aug. 6 at Carolina Shores, Betty Kibblehouse had low gross and low net in the A flight and Joanne Riedel came in second in both. In the B flight, Gwyn De Renne took low gross and low net. Rose Mary Jones came in second in both.
CLUB 25 CHAMPIONSHIP
Dianne Belair (Prestwick) and Carol Kelly (The Cape) won low gross and low net honors in Brunswick County Club 25 ladies golf league championship Aug. 24-25, playing at Panther’s Run and Tiger’s Eye at Ocean Ridge Plantation.
Belair carded a pair of 75s, winning the tournament by four strokes over Suzanne Moro (Whispering Pines). Carol Kelly’s net total of 138 gave her the net championship.
Belair and Moro took first and second gross in the first flight, followed by Mona Dye of Brierwood. Heidi Cherry (Myrtle Beach National) was the low net in the first flight, followed by Candace Cochrane (Sandpiper) and Laura Hendrick (Bald Head Island).
Second-flight winners were Carol Kelly (Cape) with low gross, followed by Barb Cleghorn (Whispering Pines) in second and Sally Duffy and Linda Van Horn, both of Ocean Ridge, in third. Jeannie Rosberg (Grand Strand Golf Association) took low net, followed by Linda Bergstrom (Carolina National) and Ann Bryan (Castle Bay), who tied for second net.
Amy Hurst (Legends) took low gross in the third flight, followed by Denise Maynard and Lorraine Heroux, both of Meadowlands, in second and third. Judy Hardin (Black Bear) won the net division in this flight, followed by Nancy Demuth (The Cape) and Ann Phlegar (Carolina National).
Betsy Bergstrom (Rivers Edge) won the fourth flight. Diana Wells (Carolina National) came in second and Karla Reens (St. James) third. Pauline Cluck (Wizard) took low net, and Pat Dickerman (Magnolia Greens), Pat Abell (Brierwood) and Sue Keylor (Olde Pointe) tied for second net.
Fifth-flight winners were Bev Carter (Black Bear) with low gross and Judy Carpenter (St. James), Bev Ibbott (Meadowlands) and Cheryl Hankinson (Magnolia Greens) tied for second. Doris McLaughlin (Ocean Ridge) took low net, Mickie Underhill (Ocean Ridge) came in second net and Mary Ann Stiles (Tournament Players Club) came in third net.
Linda Painter (Barefoot Landing) won low gross in the sixth flight, followed by Susan Menage (The Cape) in second and Mary Turner (Wizard) in third. Claire Travers (Surf Club) took low net, followed by Susann Thompson (Lockwood Folly) in second and Mary Jane Labant (Meadowlands) and Hazel Reid (Winston Salem), who tied for third.
Harriette Powell (Black Bear) won the seventh flight, with Eileen Greer (River Hills) and Nancy Griffin (Meadowlands) tying for second. Cookie Trzaski (Island green) look low net, with Peg Jones (Ocean Ridge) in second and Mil Crane (Carolina National) in third.
Eileen Reddy (Meadowlands) won the eighth flight, followed by Donna Fortney (Tidewater) and Mary Ann Furniss (Wilmington Municipal). Kris Boardman (The Cape) and Meggie McClave (Sea Trail) tied for low net and Kathy Dougherty (The Cape) came in third.

Results of the modified Stableford match Aug. 26 at Crown Park: The foursome of Gerry Speck, Jerry Way, Jack Christensen and Frank Case swept the front at +16.5, the back at +2 and overall at +18.5. Closest to the hole on 18 was Jack Christensen, 7-6.

Seven teams played in the Al Graham Stableford tourney Aug. 26. The winners were were Steve Jones, Mal Mac Raild, Don Currutt and Bob Fyock at +5. Second place at +2 was determined by a match of cards with the team of Joe McDonough, George Bridges, Buddy Broadnax and Wayne Webb beating the team of Bill Teschler, Ron Buck, Jim Barnett and Jim Burke. Fourth went to John Barron, Paul Wuthrich, Bill Marsh and a blind draw.

The Grand Strand Seniors Men’s Golf Association played its weekly event Aug. 24 at The Valley at Easport Golf Club in Little River, S.C. The format is stroke play with handicap. Each flight is awarded a low-gross and low-net winner. This week it had 77 golfers, so there were four flights, A through D. All par-3s have closest-to-the-pin awards for blue and white tees. Piper to Bay: Mike Casagranda was first at -6. Frank Testa was second at -5. Jack Hinte was third at -4. Bill Sirk was fourth at -3. Closest-to-the-pin winners were Al Hooker on the No. 3 Bay hole and Gary Swanson on the No. 5 Bay hole.
In a game where only par-4s with one-half handicaps count, Sharon Clark won the Renagades weekly tournament with a 38. Second was Karen Hertling with a 42 on a match of cards over Martha Hannon. Sharon Clark had low gross with a 96. Carol Groner had a 97 and Karen Hertling shot a 104. Sharon Clark also won low net with a 69 on a match of cards over Martha Hannon. Carol Groner came in third with a 73.
Carol Groner had fewest putts, 31. T.J. Bagley had a chip-in on 16 and Karen Hertling had a birdie on 1.
SANDPIPER BAY MGA
The game Aug, 26 was count one gross and one net score per hole. Bay to Sand: A -13 by Mike Finkelstein, Doug Williams, Bill Zanzalari and a blind draw took first. Second went to a -11 by John Radziewski, Al Bowman, Lee Parker and Chuck Maglio. Third was a tie at -10 between, the team of Lou Zotter, Ralph Bowman, Tom Townsend and John Wilkes and the team of Tony Rossi, Wayne Purdy, Joe Martere and Al Paynter.
Sand to Piper: Denny Sams, Bob Eason, Marvin Pethtal and Tom Lucket combined for a -10 and first. Gene McDonald, Norm Burgess, Frank Gajderowicz and Frank Testa shot a -3 for second. Third went to Chris Christie, Gene Anderson, Tony Hanna and Dean Montgomery with a -2.
On Aug. 24, two games were played. Piper to Bay played the shuffle. Each player hits from a different tee on each hole; team captain determines the rotation. Players do not have to hit from the same tee but all four tees must be used each hole. Score one net score from the white and black tees and one net score from the gold and red tees per hole.
