Greg Powell, of Whiteville, finished tied for fifth Sunday in the 16th North Carolina Mid-Amateur Championship of the Carolinas Golf Association.
On the par-71 Pinewood Country Club course in Asheboro, Powell shot 67-74-70—211 (-2).
Paul Tucker, 30, of Waxhaw, shot a final round 4-under par 67 to win the event at 7 under. Sherrill Britt, of West End, and Paul Simson, of Raleigh, were two strokes behind.
The top 30 scores and ties are exempt into the 2010 North Carolina Mid-Amateur Championship.
The Beachcombers played a team modified Stableford match at Carolina Shores: Bob Brownley, Jim Quigley and Bob Byrne won at + 26. Low gross: Paul Michal, 80; Harry Haggerty, 82; Stu Cleveland, Byrne, 86; Bob Smith, 88. Low net: Smith, 64; Michal, 65; Byrne, 66; Quigley, 68; Brownley and Cleveland, 69. The league play Sept. 17 for the Brick Landing Plantation Ladies Golf Association was an ace of the month competition. All ace of the month winners will compete in November for ace of the year honors.
Winner of the first flight and ace of the month was Kathy Koegel with a net 66. Mary Biesack was second at 67 and Cathy Shanley third at 77. Pat Baumgartner came in first in the second flight with a 72. Lois Huber was third with a 76 and Peg Agrimonti third with 77. The third-flight winner was Ellen Rogoff with a 73. Nancy Dickerson placed second with a 75 and Betty Grace Grabb and Peg Campana tied for third at 77. Mary Biesack had a chip-in on No. 10.
MEN’S SPORTS CLUB
The format for the weekly tournament Sept. 15 was captain’s choice: 1. Bob Koegel, Ed Lakey, Neil Nucci and Owen Letter at -12; 2. The shootout was Saturday. Ray Audette, Ed Lakey, Ray Collins and Mike Mattera were first (+16.0 points). Glen Gayheart, Neil Nucci, Dave Igelman and a blind were second (+9.0 points). Individuals: Chuck Dixon was first with +9.0 points. Bob Koegel and Ed Lakey were second with +8.0 points.
Results of the two best balls, one gross, one net tourney Sept. 17. In first at 8 under were Bernie Gruzlewski, Bob Janovic, Jack Harrison and a draw. In second at 7 under were Bob Nobes, Tom Bowen, Tom Kronyak and Odie Johnson. In third at 6 under were Dave Harper, Les Craft, Chuck Hornfeck and Gary McDaniel.
On Sept. 21, the game was two best balls. In first at 18 under were Dave Harper, Mike Prokop, Jim Pope and Joe Brust. In second at 13 under were Bob Nobes, Chuck Hornfeck, Bob Sterner and a draw. In third at 11 under were Paul Salerno, Bernie Gruzlewski, Jack Harrison and a draw.
BRIERWOOD MIXED sCRAMBLE
The team of Deloris Gausch, Liz Boyer and Wayne McGlothlin finished first at 1-under par in the Brierwood nine-hole mixed scramble Sept. 16. Fran Thomas, Marian Johnson, Randy Coats and Odie Johnson posted even par and tied with the team of Nancy McGlothlin, Marianne Nobes and Bob Nobes. Finishing next at 2-over par were Sharon Beavers, Glen Green, Ralph Trimmer and Larry Boyer.
On Sept. 14 at Meadowlands, members played an individual Stableford game. John Ogden and Joe Meo tied for first at +4 followed by Hugh Chinn at +2 and John Methvin at even.
On Sept. 16 at Farmstead, members again played Stableford. Jim Kennedy placed first with +6 followed by Joe Gallo at +1, John Ogden at even and Pete Scott at -1.
On Friday at Meadowlands, Ron Doeblin, Sid Pennington, Steve Maiorca and Joe Gallo placed first with 149. Teams scored one net and one gross per hole. Placing second were Cliff Musselman, Pete Scott, Jim Kennedy and a draw.
On Friday, the Calabashers used a Stableford format in playing Eagles Nest Golf Course. The winning team at +18 was Mike McCormack, Woody Knox, Tony Partridge and Bob Allard. In second at +9 was the team of Rod Rodriguez, Coach Dan, Ron Perry and John Duthie. Mike McCormack shot the low gross score, 81.
Results of the event Sept. 16 at Carolina Shores: In the A flight, Ted Acton was first with a 62. In the B flight, Mike McCormack won with a 65. In the C flight, Don Eisenman won with a 64. The game Sept. 11 and Friday was a two-day Ryder Cup-style competition. The teams were the One Putters and the Long Hitters. The One Putters were the winners 14.5-4.5. Eight teams played in the Sept. 16 tourney, and Joe Fioravanti, Don Koelbel, Joe McDonough and Bill Teschler were the winners at +9. Second and third were determined by a match of cards, with two teams posting a +6.
