Golf ladies work to support hospice house

The Lockwood Folly Ladies’ Golf Association hosted a fundraiser with Lockwood Folly members, friends and neighbors to benefit the Closer to Home campaign to build a new Hospice and LifeCare Center in Brunswick County. It is due to open in Bolivia in July.
Nearly 200 participants contributed to the Closer to Home capital campaign during three events in March, ranging from a luncheon and card party and a Pampered Chef drop-in to a sponsored Give Back event at Chili’s Restaurant in Shallotte. Proceeds exceeded the goal of $5,000 and will go towards the creation of an artistically tiled mosaic at the LifeCare Center.
The association had pledged to raise $10,000 for the hospice project during a three-year period. Exceeding all expectations, last October’s invitational golf tournament at Lockwood Folly Country Club near Holden Beach raised more than $15,000. Those funds raised will help create a garden at the new local facility offering professional, quality medical and respite care in a comfortable, homelike environment.
“It’s a testament to the project as well as the volunteers,” said project co-chair Mary Klinedinst of Lockwood Folly. “People want to support something local. And as the county grows, the need for hospice care has also increased.”
Lockwood Folly resident Anne Wilburn, a project co-chair as well as a retired R.N. and hospice volunteer, agreed.
“There is such a need in the community. We want to thank the numerous committees who collaborated to make these events a success; those who donated time, materials, creativity and hard work,” she said.
With the nearest Hospice Care Centers located in Whiteville and Wilmington, the new 20,000-square-foot inpatient facility in Bolivia is within one mile of the new Brunswick Novant Medical Center. A recent $1 million grant from the State Employees Credit Union has brought the SECU Brunswick County Hospice Care Center that much closer to opening its doors to the community.
