Nonprofit targets area youth

Sonburst Ministries is planning a golf tournament to help raise funds for its youth programs.

Its first fundraising golf tournament is set for Saturday, March 23, at Brick Landing Plantation Golf Club.

Organizers are seeking prize donations for the tournament as well as monetary donations for the ministry and sponsorships.

Sonburst Ministries is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization. It is dedicated to developing events and programs to ensure local youth have outlets for entertainment and education centered around a Christian-based faith.

Sonburst Ministries was started in 2011 by Joseph Memory, an Ocean Isle Beach resident who works as a sergeant with the highway patrol in Robeson County.

About two years ago, Memory felt God call him to create a ministry for youth between the ages of 13-19. He garnered support from area churches and together with Diane Tripp and Chet Hales he co-founded Sonburst Ministries.

Since that time Sonburst Ministries has hosted several events with an average of 300-400 youth in attendance.

Sonburst has hosted a surf contest; six full-day events that included music, games, food, contests and personal testimony; and three youth rallies focused on local youth and introduction to the ministry.

“This is just our beginning. With your support Sonburst Ministries will expand the programs and offer more opportunities to meet our mission of introducing youth to the gospel of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ,” Memory said. “Our efforts are just beginning, and we look to our community to help us expand our mission and our successful growth.”

Sonburst Ministries is an interdenominational ministry whose mission is to bring youth to know Christ and for them to become viable, active members of a church.

Each event is a collaboration between several churches, each providing an essential service.

The golf tournament fee includes greens and cart fees, two flights and winners’ prizes in each flight, breakfast, a pig pickin’ lunch, a door prize ticket, a golfer’s goody bag, complimentary driving-range balls and prizes for on-the-course skill challenges.

Breakfast starts at 7:30 a.m. with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. Team entry fee is $200 for a group of four.

All donations are tax-deductible.

“Sonburst Ministries will use 100 percent of the net proceeds from all our fundraising activities to benefit local youth,” Memory said. “We are very proud of our past events we have had and we will continue to reach our youth in the best means possible in order to bring the word and strength of Christianity to all our youth in our local and surrounding areas.”
